I am a Middle School Band Teacher by day, foster dog parent by night, and a runner by the even earlier morning! Around 3 years ago, I looked at myself and realized something had to change. I was not healthy, and was the heaviest I had ever been. I strapped on my super old running shoes and decided I was going to become a runner. I’d had a few bouts with running before but had always given up. That day, I ran 1 mile before being totally gassed and out of breath. Thanks to my wife pushing me, I didn’t give up, and went from running twice a week to 3-4 times a week and slowly increasing my distance. I remember hitting 2 miles and then my first 5k since college. Right around August, one of my students invited me out to a F3 (peer led boot camps) workout. It kicked my butt, but the men were encouraging so I went back. I started going to workouts on Tuesday-Saturday there, and then one of the guys invited me to the running group. I started running with them 3-4 days a week, and right when I got in the swing of things everything shut down because of COVID. School was completely online, and all of the things that usually keep me busy in the spring with work (week long band trips, performances, banquets, etc.) were cancelled. Faced with the prospect of all of this extra free time, I pulled a Forrest Gump and “just started running”. I upped my mileage week after week and really started to enjoy the “getaway” that was running. I registered for the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee, and it was all downhill (and a lot of hill sprints) from there. Just a short year after COVID hit and I started taking running seriously, I ran my first marathon. Since then I have subsequently PR’d my half marathon (sub 90) and run my first ultra! Aside from running I am passionate about the outdoors, conservation, an animal rescues. My wife and I met in college in the mountains and love to be outside hiking and camping, and we foster rescue dogs as often as we can!
